Gilgandra Shire Council is proposing to undertake a river restoration, water security and beautification project on the Castlereagh River adjoining Gilgandra. The project is proposed to restore the formation of a waterbody in the Castlereagh River, which will in turn create a public recreational space and emergency water supply.
The key components of the project are:
- Waterway and foreshore restoration - sand excavation, bank stabilisation and restoration work
- Reservoir/velocity control structure and fish passage - construction of one or more in-channel reservoir or velocity control structures to re-create a semi-permanent body of water and fish passage to restore natural ecological pathways
- Waterfront beautification - potentially includes cycling/walking pathways, seating, car parking, amenities, recreation & BBQ areas
- Sand processing facility - potential commercial component to support the project
The project is currently in the pre-feasibility stage.
