LEVEL 1 WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED FOR GILGANDRA SHIRE

Published on 28 April 2020

Level 1 water restrictions throughout Gilgandra Shire will be lifted effective 1 May 2020.

General Manager, David Neeves says,

“Council implemented Level 1 water restrictions on 1 November 2019 due to worsening drought conditions and the limited ability of Council’s water supply infrastructure to cope with the increased demand at the time.”

Adding that the restriction will be lifted with the change in rainfall we have seen recently,

“Since the middle of January 2020, we have been fortunate enough to receive consistent rainfall that has resulted in several flushes of the Castlereagh River. This, combined with milder seasonal conditions, means we have seen reduced consumer demand resulting in less pressure on the supply network. Council therefore resolved to lift the restrictions at its April meeting.

This means from 1 May 2020, residents will now be able to water their gardens and lawns at any time, wash down walls and paved surfaces and wash cars with a hose. There will be no activity or timing restrictions in place.”

Mayor Doug Batten said,

“The community were actively involved in conserving water when the restrictions were implemented, recognising the tough drought conditions our community endured. It’s encouraging to see a return to more favourable conditions, with grass in the paddocks and many tractors going well into the night sowing a much needed crop.

We hope this change of season stays and brings a welcome economic boost to local businesses and the region.”
