Armistice & Rising Sun Projects - Have Your Say

Gilgandra Shire Council has selected the 2018 Armistice Project, a returned soldier sculpture by artist Brett Garling to be located in Tooraweenah.

The sculpture depicts a returned soldier stripping off his army uniform while reaching for a plough, looking forward to the country of his new future, symbolically moving away from war to taking up life on the land.

Council is seeking feedback regarding suitable locations for this sculpture within Tooraweenah, and invite the Gilgandra Shire community to take part in an online survey.

Mayor, Doug Batten says Council believes the project is an exciting one for the Gilgandra Shire,

“The sculpture at Tooraweenah provides a synergy with the Coo-ee sculpture, by the same artist, at the Plaza in Gilgandra. The call of the Coo-ee and subsequent Coo-ee and Kookaburra Marches of soldiers is accentuated by the soldier then returning to our area in soldier settler locations”.

At the same time, Council is seeking feedback regarding a suitable location for the community project, the Rising Sun structure. Council purchased this structure as a community project based on support and lobbying from community members.

Mayor, Doug Batten says Council is keen to hear from the community with support and ideas.

“This is an opportunity for the Shire to have a say in projects that will instil a vibrancy and sense of place in our community to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”

Cr Batten adds,

“Council encourages all members of our community to review these projects and offer suggestion in the locations, taking ownership of these great community additions.”
