SHELLHARBOUR ANGLICAN COLLEGE COMMUNITY SERVICE

For immediate release.

Students from Shellharbour Anglican College have given up a week of school holidays to complete volunteer community service in Gilgandra. Some of the students are participating as part of the Duke of Edinburgh program and saw the students working in the Gilgandra Shire from 13 - 20 April.

Acting Director of Planning & Environment at Council, Brian Irvin says.

“The students and the teachers are always a pleasure to host each year. The work they achieve in our Shire is greatly appreciated and is a credit to their school community.”

Tracy Scott from Shellharbour Anglican College co-ordinates the visit to Gilgandra each year.

“The experience teaches the students leadership, and teamwork while fostering volunteerism and pride in service for the community.”

This year the students completed a range of activities in the community working with several volunteer committees and included painting the Tooraweenah Showground amenities, maintenance to the Tooraweenah Aerodrome terminal building, working with the Aboriginal Inland Mission church and the St. Ambrose Church, painting facilities at the Gilgandra Racecourse and preparing the Gilgandra Showgrounds for the Annual Show.

Some of the students were also treated to a cultural experience with Elder Uncle Ralph Naden at Yalmabirra Boogijoon Doolan Cultural Camp at Balladooran, others had a sleepout at Berida Woolshed and completed farm work, and some students worked in Tooraweenah at Phil and Penny Henley’s Emu Logic farm.

The experience was topped off with a BBQ lunch with Rob & Annette Morris to see their personal collection of memorabilia. Thank you to all of the people in our community who assisted with suppling work for the students during their stay.
