HAVE YOUR SAY – GILGANDRA SHIRE SIGNAGE PROJECT

Published on 28 April 2020

From windmills to Coo-ee’s, our Aboriginal heritage, wheat crop, Warrumbungles or something entirely different – Have Your Say on what should be included in Gilgandra’s planned Shire Signage Project.

Residents are invited to participate in the community survey to inform Council’s Signage Project. The project will see the upgrade of 21 existing highway signs as well as new primary town entry pieces on the main entrances to Gilgandra, with secondary pieces developed for Village entries.

Mayor Doug Batten says,

“These town entry pieces will capture and reflect the spirit of Gilgandra Shire with the elements changing between our township and our villages. We want to know from the community what is important to include in their new town entry signs.”

Adding,

“This is an opportunity for our community to provide real feedback so that what is achieved is a true reflection of our community and Gilgandra Region. We believe this project will have real impact in terms of residents’ pride, visitation and the aesthetics of our beautiful home.”

The survey asks respondents just five simple questions, using examples for inspiration for other locations, and how some may look for Gilgandra.

This project follows the refresh of Council’s brand and the development of a community brand (Gilgandra Region). The new brand followed a collaborative Council and community process which began in 2018. The roll out of this brand has been seen in the development of new documents and promotional materials, staff uniforms and across social media and Council’s website.

Council’s contribution to this project has been developed over a number of years through savings accumulated. This has enabled Council to access additional funding towards the project. Council has a budget allocation of $250,000 for the Shire Signage project, including funding under the Stronger Country Community Fund (SCCF) Round 2 of $100,000 and $75,000 for electronic noticeboards under SCCF Round 3.

The project comprises:

  • 6 x Gilgandra Shire entry signs to replace the existing timber routed signs
  • 2 x super site Gilgandra Region signs on northern and southern Newell Highway approaches on existing Ooh Media billboards
  • 8 x tourist messaging signs – to replace out of date promotional signage
  • 2 x new town entry feature signs to be located on the southern and northern entrances of Gilgandra township in Apex Park and adjacent to dog pound subject to RMS approval
  • 5 x Village entry signs, smaller versions of the town entry feature signs, to replace the timber routed entry signs at Tooraweenah, Armatree and Curban

Community groups and committees within the Shire will also be asked to participate in the project as we develop images and content for the highway billboards.

It is proposed the project will be finalised by December 2020

All residents are encouraged to complete the survey online by visiting http://www.gilgandra.nsw.gov.au/Connect/Have-your-say/Signage-Project.  If you do not have access online, please contact Council’s Marketing & Communications team and we can arrange for the survey over the phone or a printed copy to be collected from the Library Click & Collect service, Service NSW or Community Care transport.

The community survey will close Monday, 18 May 2020.
