Australia Day

Each year the people of Gilgandra Shire are invited to nominate fellow citizens or organisations/events for an award recognising outstanding achievement during the past year and/or contribution to the local community over a number of years.


Citizen of the Year
To be eligible, the person must be 30 years or older on 26 January of the relevant year.

Young Citizen Award
To be eligible, the person must be under 30 years and over 16 years of age on 26 January of the relevant year.

Sports Achievement Award
Presented to the person/team who has achieved the highest honour during the year.

Community Event of the Year
Presented to the person/group who has staged the most outstanding community event during the past year.

Community Group/Organisation of the Year
Presented the to group who is deemed to be the most outstanding community service organisation during the past year.



  • Nominees must be Australian citizens and residing in the Gilgandra Shire at the time of nomination
  • Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in subsequent years
  • Self nominations will not be accepted


Nominations for 2015 Australia Day Awards are now open and should be completed and returned to Council prior to Friday, 8 January 2016.

The awards will be presented on Australia Day as part of the official Australia Day Ceremony held in Hunter Park, Gilgandra.

Breakfast is available from 7.30am and the awards ceremony gets underway at 9.00am.
