YOUR COMMUNITY SPACE – TELL US YOUR IDEAS

Published on 28 October 2019

Gilgandra Shire’s new community space is coming and Council wants your ideas, including its new name.

The building at 30-32 Miller Street, formerly the Target building, is being activated to ultimately become Gilgandra’s library and community space.

For the next 12 months this building is in its transition period. It is a place to try a new business idea, work on a community project, be a home for community groups, hold events; exhibit artists’ works or be host to other ideas you may have. If you are interested in utilising this space, Expressions of Interest are open now via Council’s website.

Mayor, Doug Batten says,

“We all love this community and want a strong future. We have to take brave steps to survive tough times. Here is an incredible opportunity and we encourage all residents to be part of this journey.”

 General Manager, David Neeves adds,

“Council has a plan and we want you to be part of it. It is in draft stage, and now is the time to be involved. It’s called the Gilgandra Activation Blueprint.

“We are excited to present this to our community, and the plan focusses on bringing together current projects, plans and ideas and creating a single focused vision that we all are aware of and as a community we can collectively work towards. This plan is now available on our website or at the Administrations Offices, Library and Service NSW.”

Council invites the community to come and be part of the discussion. There will be community sessions to be held in the former Target building:

Monday, 11 November – Community Sessions

4pm – 5.30pm

6.00pm – 7.30pm

Tuesday, 12  November – Business Breakfast Session

7.15am – 8.30am

You are also able to have your say with feedback, ideas and submitting suggestions for a new name for this space at Council’s website or by following Council’s Facebook page.

Youth of Gilgandra are also invited to complete a ‘Dear Future…’ letter, asking students what they would like to see as part of Gilgandra’s and our Main Street’s future.

For those that have ideas, businesses, group activities or co-working ideas they would like to try in the space, Council is asking that you complete an Expression of Interest form on Council’s website. This is to assist progress planning of how the space will look in the transition period and what it will require.

Mayor Batten says the key to this project is early engagement from our community.

“With the support and ideas from our community, we have good opportunities to secure grant funding and external support. Many main streets in regional area are changing, we are not a community to let this become a negative for us, we are intervening now and taking action to ensure there are positive outcomes for our Shire.”
