Gilgandra Swimming Pool is experiencing ongoing problems with a fine, silty sediment in the pool that has accumulated over the off-season.

Council is having difficulty extracting the sediment through conventional pool maintenance practices.

General Manager, David Neeves says,

“We have taken steps to completely drain the pool to thoroughly clean and remove this sediment before filling again. Should the problem persist, additional measures will be taken.”

Adding,

“The pool is an ageing piece of infrastructure that has been part of our community since the 1930s, because of this, we acknowledge the challenges that are faced with this infrastructure. In addition to the sediment build-up, we are also experiencing issues with pumping systems and the pipe work.”

However, it is exciting to note that Council, in its Long Term Financial Plan, has committed funds this year towards planning of a combined indoor sports centre where there is the potential to include a new outdoor swimming pool.

Mr Neeves says,

“This project is one that has been identified through Council’s Community Strategic Plan process and is one that enhances the liveability and vibrancy of our community; it will be an exciting project for our Shire.”

Adding,

“Within the next year, there is an allocation of $50,000 to go towards the combined sports centre planning, which will see concepts and designs developed in consultation with our community.”

Council is unable to commit to an opening date for the pool at this stage but is working hard to see that it is opened as soon as possible.
