Get a Free Cuppa for the Driver this Holiday Period

School holidays are here and Anzac Day is fast approaching, which means there will be an increased number of vehicles travelling long distances on the road, resulting in an increased risk of fatigue related crashes. The ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ scheme in South West and Western NSW targets tired drivers in a bid to reduce fatigue related crashes by offering a free cuppa to long distance drivers.

When drivers travel more than 100 kilometres from the town on their drivers licence, between 1 March and 31 May every year, they are eligible for a free cuppa at participating ‘Free Cuppa’ businesses.

Drivers can find participating ‘Free Cuppa’ towns and businesses by visiting www.freecuppa.com.au or the ‘Free Cuppa’ Facebook page.

The ‘Free Cuppa’ website is mobile friendly and participating businesses can be searched by ‘Highway’ or ‘Town’ with directions to businesses being made easy through a quick link to google maps.

Gilgandra Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer Jayne Bleechmore explained that participating businesses have ‘Free Cuppa’ window decals and banners or sandwich boards at the front of their business to make them identifiable and most participating ‘Free Cuppa’ towns have large roadside banners at the entrance to their town.

Participating ‘Free Cuppa’ business manager, Jeff Jones, of the ‘Gilgandra Services Club’ explained that it’s great to have tourists stop and have a free cuppa to prevent fatigue and it also gives them a reason to stop and revive in our club bistro and also in our town.

This scheme has the same focus as ‘Driver Reviver’ sites that are based Australia wide, in the way that it encourages drivers to stop and revive whilst having a free cuppa during their long distance drive. Different ‘Driver Reviver’ sites are also open over the school holiday period and Anzac Day. To find out the location and opening times of ‘Driver Reviver ‘sites Australia wide please visit www.tollgroup.com/driverreviver.

Both ‘Free Cuppa for the Driver’ and ‘Driver Reviver’ are important as fatigue is a big contributor to crashes on NSW roads and these schemes are vital in reducing the number of tired drivers on our roads.
